Well Memorial Day just recently passed and on Friday it will be 4 years since Carrie Lee was killed in Iraq and 4 years ago tomorrow since Virgil died in Iraq (two friends in three days makes on helluva week). Even as this amount of time has passed, I find it difficult to not get choked up when I think about my friends, gone. I have lost other friends over there before and since but I can say the loss of Carrie Lee effected me more than the others combined. Maybe because she was a girl but I really doubt that had too much to do with it. I enlisted Carrie into the National Guard so she really was one of my soldiers.
I’m not having a pity party, I’m just reminiscing. Virgil was one of the most laid-back guys I ever met. Always easy going, always even-tempered. Just a good ol’ southern boy with a love for his kids most could only hope to have. Carrie was one of the most wonderful, fun loving, full of life people I’ve ever known. My other friends? I hadn’t been in contact with them for many years and only heard of their deaths through “channels”. Of course it had an effect on me but it was more distant I guess.
Anyway, I tip my glass to all of my friends, fellow soldiers and Marines who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.
I salute you my friends. You are gone but you will never be forgotten.
